News API v1.5 - ATOM response format

List Response - Navigation

This general response type is used for enumerating the available lists of resources, such as feeds, schedules,  packages and galleries when accessing the corresponding base endpoint:

All list types for the ATOM response format are structured as ATOM feeds, with each option listed as an entry. Note that for navigation list responses, paging of results is enabled and may be controlled by the offset and limit parameters. The itemsPerPage will be be no more than limit, whilst totalResults will be the total list size.

Each entry has an id, title and updated time, as well as an alternate link which must be used to access the resource. Do not assume that the id field will take the form of a visitable URL.

Search Response

The search response is returned for feed listing/searching and ad-hoc general searches on the /assets and /feeds/{id} endpoints. The response is based on the list response, but with additional information to assist navigation through the result space.

Again the totalResults and itemsPerPage have different values, indicating that you can page through the set of search results using the limit and offset parameters. Also note the atom link elements with a rel attribute of "next" and "last", to assist navigation through the result set.

The above search response also includes a set of facets which can be used to drill down further into the result set, enabled by use of the facets parameter. The when facet provides a breakdown of results into commonly-used time bands (if a specific band contains no results then it will be omitted). The tag facet reveals how many results include the (up to) 10 most commonly used tags within the result set, inviting guided navigation by adding an additional ?tag= query parameter to add the relevant filter.

For search responses in ATOM, each entry is a story represented as a short-form Summary Asset Response.

Package response

The package response is returned for packages, where there is a managed finite set of assets curated by PA editorial teams.

    <content type="html">&lt;article&gt;&lt;section data-page-number="1" data-page-modified="2015-08-17T10:46:04Z"&gt;&lt;p&gt;The family of a woman killed in the Glasgow bin lorry crash will seek to bring charges against the driver after prosecutors ruled out a case against him.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Lawyers acting for Jacqueline Morton, 51, have requested that an inquiry under way into the December 22 tragedy be halted as they attempt to bring a private prosecution against Harry Clarke, 58.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Mr Clarke was behind the wheel of the council refuse truck that veered out of control on a busy shopping street, killing Ms Morton, from Glasgow, and five others.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;A fatal accident inquiry at Glasgow Sheriff Court has heard evidence that Mr Clarke had a history of dizzy spells and fainting which he failed to disclose to the DVLA and on job application forms.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Dorothy Bain QC, told Sheriff John Beckett she had been instructed to seek an adjournment of the inquiry in order to seek authority to bring a private prosecution.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Funding has still to be secured and it may take up to three months to establish whether they can proceed, she said.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;A lawyer for the family of victim Gillian Ewing, 52, from Edinburgh, said they supported the motion for adjournment but relatives of 29-year-old Stephenie Tait, from Glasgow, said they would not be involved in any private prosecution.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Ronald Conway, solicitor for the Taits, said public interest would best be served by continuing with the inquiry, which is looking at Mr Clarke's medical history, the bin lorry and the route it took three days before Christmas.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;He said: "Telling lies is not a crime; telling lies to the medical profession is not a crime."&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Erin McQuade, 18, and her grandparents Jack Sweeney, 68, and Lorraine Sweeney, 69, from Dumbarton, also died in the tragedy.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Their lawyer, Mark Stewart QC, said they reserve the right to prosecute anyone found to carry personal responsibility for the crash.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The Crown Office ordered an investigation into the circumstances of the accident after ruling that there was no evidence to warrant criminal proceedings.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The inquiry, now in its fifth week, will hear from the remaining witnesses before the sheriff makes a decision on Ms Bain's request on Thursday.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Mr Clarke himself was expected to give evidence but this has been complicated by the prospect of a private prosecution.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;His lawyer said he "wants to answer all the questions that are put to him at the inquiry" but added that his client was entitled to "privilege against self-incrimination".&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Solicitor General Lesley Thomson QC, who is leading the inquiry, said that a private prosecution was a "rare and exceptional beast", and the development would need to be considered by the Crown.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The DVLA last week ruled out taking any action against Mr Clarke, who was a driver with First Bus before taking up a job with Glasgow City Council in 2011.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The inquiry has heard evidence that he blacked out at the wheel of a stationary bus in Glasgow in April 2010.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Doctors diagnosed Mr Clarke with vaso vagal syndrome, a condition that affects the heart rate and blood pressure.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Witnesses on the day of December's crash reported seeing the lorry driver slumped at the wheel as the vehicle mounted the pavement on Queen Street and careered up the road towards George Square where it crashed into the Millennium Hotel.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/section&gt;&lt;/article&gt;</content>

The package response is also returned as an atom feed, where every curated asset in the package is an atom entry. The atom feed title and id identifies the package, whilst the updated element is the last time the package was published by PA editorial with any changes (textual or media).

For convenience, the atom entry for each asset in the package is returned as a Full Asset Response (unlike the JSON) so that the entire package feed may be ingested and used without further API calls.

Each asset returned in a package is always the last published lead from the story of that asset. Therefore the asset id (entry/id) may change over time as new leads are written and published to replace the previous. However there will always be a consistent link to the story that the asset belongs to, in the <link rel="story" .../> element. The <pa:leadNumber> in each entry will inform which lead the asset is within it's story.

Schedule response

The schedule response is returned for schedules, where there is a managed finite set of assets curated by PA editorial teams.

The schedule response is similar to the packages response, in that it is returned as an atom feed with an atom entry for the last published lead of each asset. The feed id and title identifies the schedule, whilst the updated element is the last publish time of the schedule.

For convenience, the atom entry for each asset in the schedule is returned as a Full Asset Response (unlike the JSON) so that the entire schedule feed may be ingested and used without further API calls.

The totalResults and itemsPerPage values will, by default, be equal to the number of items in the schedule - which are all returned. The offset and limit parameters may be passed to modify this behaviour to return less items.

Summary Asset Response

This short-form representation of an asset is used in all ATOM search responses.
